Instructor Responsibilities

Individuals can become Institute Instructors in one of two ways:

  1. Completing a formal Institute Instructor Candidate Course - Those with little or no teaching experience must participate in a formal Institute Instructor Candidate Course (IICC). The IICC covers topics such as teaching methodologies, complying with Institute policies and procedures, course objectives, conducting skill practice sessions, and administering examinations. ICCCs are administered by Institute Instructor-Trainers.

  2. Requesting Instructor Reciprocity - Those with adequate content knowledge (e.g. first aid, CPR, AED) who can also demonstrate adequate teaching experience (e.g. professional educator; state EMS, fire, or police instructor; or an instructor from other nationally recognized training program) can receive instructor reciprocity. Instructor reciprocity requires a simple orientation to the course materials and ECSI policies and procedures online.

Institute Instructors have many important responsibilities that ensure a quality ECSI course. Institute Instructors should possess the knowledge and skills necessary to teach the course and shall:

  • Facilitate Learning - Teach the assigned material in an engaging manner that facilitates the learning process of the participants in the course. Institute Instructors are responsible for ensuring that proper content and skills are covered in all courses, including having all course materials and equipment available.

  • Be Familiar with Material - In order to be effective teachers, Institute Instructors must familiarize themselves with the course objectives, course materials, and ECSI policies and procedures.

  • Evaluate Participants - In order to receive an AAOS Course Completion Card, participants must complete the final examination and receive a passing grade of 80% and demonstrate competency in the skills taught.

  • Submit Roster - Submit participant course roster, of those successfully completing the course, to the Institute Educational Center. Participant course rosters can be found in Section 7 of this manual.

  • Keep Up-to-Date - Stay abreast of ECSI course content, ECSI course materials, and ECSI policies and procedures. The ECSI electronic newsletter will assist with this responsibility.
